Read Genesis 3 before you read this lesson.
In our last lesson, we learned about God’s masterpiece, the Earth and everything in it. But when you compare the masterpiece the Earth was back then to the Earth we have now, you can’t help but ask “What happened?!” Why is the world today so different that the world we once had? If I could describe what happened to it in three words, I would describe it as a “red button moment.” Now Adam and Eve didn’t press any literal red buttons, but they had a real red button moment and today, we’re going to see how it messed up our masterpiece.
Now a red button moment typically goes like this. We see the red button and the warning label that says “DO NOT PRESS.” Then we get the urge to press it. More often than not, we give in and press the button. After we do, we wish we didn’t. The red button in this case was the tree of knowledge of good and evil God put in the middle of the garden of Eden. Now God warned Adam and Eve not to eat the fruit from this tree. This was the “DO NOT PRESS” label God gave to them.
“And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” (Gen. 2:15,16)
Satan figured if he could get them to eat the forbidden fruit, to “press that red button” to disobey God, he would be able to take control of the earth and Adam and Eve. So Satan used the most beautiful and attractive creature in the garden, the serpent, to get Eve’s attention and tempted her (and Adam through Eve) to eat the fruit. He got Eve to believe that nothing would happen to her if she ate the fruit. He convinced her to desire the fruit and believe that it was good for her. Unfortunately, Eve believed the serpent and ate the fruit. Adam, when he had to choose whether or not to eat the fruit, ate the fruit too. But right after that moment, right after they pushed this red button, God came to the garden and He told them the consequences that they and His masterpiece now had to deal with.
Ever since that fateful day, people have been pressing that red button nonstop. Billions of red button moments over thousands of years turned our masterpiece into the mess we’re dealing with today. We’re living in one giant red button moment right now. But God promised Adam and Eve that one day He would deal with this “red button issue” and we’re going to learn more about this promise in the next couple of lessons.
Ever notice how the worst things for us to do are the most attractive? It’s no coincidence! Sometimes it’s hard to know what’s bad for you because Satan makes the worst things, those “red buttons”, look so good to press. Ask God to show you what your red buttons are. He’ll show you how to deal with them.
