A God of Good…and Evil?

Before His Second Coming, the Lord will send His prophets to get the world ready. Since the day of man’s fall, he has heard the promise that God will restore all things and right all wrongs (Gen. 3:15). But many people are rejecting it because they have been deceived into believing that God is the Author of the good news…and the bad news.

With every outbreak of disease, every victimization of the vulnerable among us, and every catastrophe to hit the earth, the wicked blame God for the evil that comes from their disobedience to Him. They labor to turn the world away from the Lord before His Second Coming, something the Bible told us was going to happen.

“Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming?…all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation” (2 Pet. 3:3, 4).

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Eph. 6:12).

So how did these scoffers popularize the idea that God was responsible for the good and the evil in the world?

Since the days of Noah and Lot, these has always been a class of skeptics appointed by Satan to lead the masses to their destruction. The Scriptures tells us plainly that these ungodly cynics walk after their own lusts. It was by doing this Satan led them to believe that the evil of their hands was God’s fault, something he also led Adam and Eve to believe (Gen. 3:1-13).  He helped them develop their views, exalted them to positions of great influence, and used them to lead millions of people into accepting the falsehood that curses God and blesses men.

Those who accept their base opinions testify that they have no understanding of God. They are more apt to believe the cunning words of men and women that don’t know them or love them rather than the God who created them and sent His Son to die for them. These people, even those in the church, turn from God and His Scriptures for a reason. Unlike the scoffers of every generation, God’s Word will tell them the truth about their lusts, and they don’t want to hear that.

“For the world of God is quick and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Heb. 4:12).

“For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved” (Jn. 3:20).

But God’s Word does much more than rebuke the sins of men. It also explains the causes of the sins we mistakenly blame God for doing. It tells us that the devil is the author of sin (Jn. 8:44; 1 Jn. 3:8) and that by continuing in sin, we bring the consequences of disobedience on ourselves.

Remember the ones we talked about earlier (disease, crime, and catastrophes)? They’re all a result of disobeying God. Had we kept the diet God gave man in the beginning and the laws regarding our health, disease would not be so prevalent in our society (Gen. 1:29; Exod. 15:26). Science has proved this repeatedly. Had we kept the Ten Commandments, no man would seek to harm his neighbor (Exod. 20:12-17; Mk. 12:31; Rom. 13:9). The laws of men are based on this divine law. Had we cared for the earth as God appointed us to and kept the understanding that Satan causes calamities to turn us from God, we would not be so quick to accept the opinions of last-day scoffers (Gen. 1:27, 28; Job 1-2:10).

So how can you know which of these parties to believe? How do you find out if God is good and not evil? Get to know God for yourself. Build a relationship with Him. Open your dust-covered Bible and see how He dealt with people who rebelled against Him, sometime for hundreds of years! Read how He saved the lives of Jews and Gentiles over and over and how He helped them become better people. Ask Him to help you to understand why things are the way they are. Unlike the scoffers of our days that blame everything on “religion”, political ideologies and spurious scientific theories, God will tell you the truth. Once you get to know Him, you’ll see what kind of God He has always been, One who works for your good.
