This blog is a follow up to Epic Star Wars, Episode III: Satan Strikes Back.

When sin entered the universe, man and angel like rebelled against God. When we sin, we are playing dangerous games with God. The risks of playing these kinds of games are far more dangerous than the risks that come with participating in the Olympic games. If we lose these games in the last days, we lose everything. Thus, it is important to know what these games are and how to beat them.

What are a couple of the “games” we play with God when we sin?

Read Genesis 3 before you read this lesson.

In our last lesson, we learned about God’s masterpiece, the Earth and everything in it. But when you compare the masterpiece the Earth was back then to the Earth we have now, you can’t help but ask “What happened?!” Why is the world today so different that the world we once had? If I could describe what happened to it in three words, I would describe it as a “red button moment.” Now Adam and Eve didn’t press any literal red buttons, but they had a real red button moment and today, we’re going to see how it messed up our masterpiece.

Episode III: Satan Strikes Back

A long time ago in the universe, God created a paradise and assigned the beings He made in His own image to take care of it. Everything in it was “very good”, according to God (Gen. 1:31). But Satan determined to seize this paradise of God’s and he devised a plan to take it. Would he succeed? Let’s find out! But before we begin, let us pray.

Heavenly Father, please help us understand how Satan struck at Adam and Eve. Help us see what his strike did to them and why we live in a sinful world today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Satan once had every blessing of heaven and now they were gone from him forever. But man was just beginning to behold the blessings of the Lord. They had only begun to see the glory of God and grow closer to Him. Their growing, loving relationship with God kindled the jealousy and envy of Satan. The happiness of Adam and Eve was a stark contrast to the loneliness of heart Satan was now enduring. But his pride, wounded from being expelled from heaven, kept him from walking down the path of repentance. The phantom menace pushed him forward to continue his rebellion against God. It pushed him to go ahead with his plan to seize the garden of God and use it as his headquarters for his rebellion. To do it, Satan planned to turn Adam and Eve from God to the dark side.

Now God did not leave Adam and Eve ignorant of Satan’s evil plan. In addition to God’s command not to eat of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, God undoubtedly warned the holy pair of the evil planned against them and the author of this plan. According to the pattern we went over in the first episode of this saga, we know that God warned Adam and Eve about Satan’s cruel intentions. This was a dangerous time for them, when they would be tempted by the dark side of creation.  One could only wonder what words He spoke of the one who rebelled against Him in heaven. They must have been effective words, for the power of this warning forced Satan to resort to deceptive warfare to accomplish his evil goal. He knew he would be thwarted by open warfare against or an open invitation to Adam and Eve. So he used the serpent, a creature once attractive in all appearance, to accomplish his plan. Through this serpent at the forbidden tree, Satan waited patiently for his moment to strike. And that moment came.

Together, Adam and Eve would have repelled the temptation of Satan. But when Eve wandered from the side of Adam in the garden, she came dangerously close to the forbidden tree. At that moment, Satan struck! Like a demonic serpent, he quickly filled her mind with the same venom that poisoned his own mind in the courts of heaven, and we can see it for ourselves. Turn to Gen. 2:9 and read carefully. “And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.” God did create every fruit to be good for food and pleasing to the eye, including the fruit He forbade Adam and Eve to eat. But it was the desire that Eve now had in her that doomed her. Turn to Gen. 3:6 and read it carefully. “And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat…” (Emphasis added). It was this unholy desire, this desire to for godlike wisdom (Gen. 3:5). She desired the same higher state, as Satan did, to be like the Most High. In acting on this selfish desire, Eve put herself over divine law and, therefore, over God. Adam was faced with the same temptation when Eve gave him the fruit. He put his love for Eve over his love for God and in so doing, Adam cultivated the same unholy desire within himself. He, too, ate of the forbidden fruit.

This one lesson cannot be overemphasized. Disobedience of this one commandment brought evil into the world. Satan brought the Epic Star Wars to the earth and the paradise created for us was lost through this one act. The devil had now expanded his rebel alliance, for in addition to his angels he now had the humans, though not entirely. His foothold against God had now been established, for now he held a limited degree of authority on the Earth. The dominion given to man over the Earth was now in his possession. This is why the Scriptures call Satan the “prince of this world.” (Jn. 12:31; 14:30)

Though the pair repented and were forgiven for their crime, this act had terrible consequences. Our environment and its inhabitants were changed entirely. Even the heavens were not exempt from them, for even stars die now! (The literal stars, not the angels.)

Adam and Eve learned the hard way what evil truly was, for they already knew what good was before they fell. But now their godly image was marred by the phantom menace.  They now knew that there was no higher state of existence apart from God. They were filled with shame, and even tried to blame God for their sin. The marriage relationship was changed, for Adam would now rule over Eve. Even man’s relationship with the Earth was altered. Now the Earth would resist him and he would eventually succumb to it, not the other way around.

But the worst consequence of all was having to go out from the presence of God. Can you imagine being sent away from God after being in His presence? Adam and Eve sure didn’t, but the Lord had to send them away. He had to send them away to stop Satan’s plan to immortalize rebellion, which would have made his foothold on Earth, and our separation from God, permanent. Remember, Adam and Eve could no longer resist Satan on their own. Adam and Eve repented, but because of their sin, they would not be able to resist the temptation to eat from the tree of life on their own. If they became immortal then, the plan to save man would have been thwarted forever. Sin would also be immortalized and Satan would have kept his limited dominion forever. Moreover, sinful man, as seen in the examples of Isaiah and Daniel, cannot stand before God. (Isa. 6:1-5; Dan. 10:1-8) The couple would die from being exposed to the purity of God for a long period of time. Thus, they were cast out of the garden of Eden before they could be tempted to eat from the tree of life.

One can only imagine the grief of the two as they left the garden and in the hundreds of years they lived after their expulsion. They lost two sons, they watched many of their children and their children’s children join the rebellion against God, and they witnessed decay and destruction prevail on the Earth because of their choice. The sight of these things would break the heart of anyone who loved the Lord. But God did not leave these two without hope. It was this hope that enabled them to go on with their lives after their expulsion from the garden of God. What is the hope the Lord promised Adam and Eve? Find out next time in the next exciting episode of Epic Star Wars!
